Google moves Blogger pages to HTTPS versions

In a move to strengthen the security of its Blogger platform, Google launched HTTPS versions of all blogs hosted on the company's blogspot.com domain.

“HTTPS is fundamental to internet security; it protects the integrity and confidentiality of data sent between websites and visitors' browsers,” wrote software engineer Milinda Perera, in a Google Security Blog post. “This update expands Google's HTTPS Everywhere mission to all blogspot domain blogs.”

The search giant began offering opt-in HTTPS support for blogspot domain blogs in September 2015. Tuesday's announcement allows visitors to visit blogspot domains through encrypted platforms. Existing links to blogspot web pages will not be affected, wrote Perera.

Last month, the publishing platform WordPress, a competitor to Google's Blogger, turned on HTTPS encryption for custom domains hosted on WordPress.com. In 2014, the publishing platform implemented HTTPS for websites that used WordPress.com subdomains.

A year ago, Google announced it would roll out HTTPS on mobile, video and desktop display ads served to the Google Display Network, AdMob and DoubleClick publishers. YouTube ads were moved to HTTPS at the end of 2014.
