Equinix, VMware tie up for distributed cloud service

Equinix and VMware announced at the recent VMware Explore 2022 Europe a partnership to produce a distributed cloud service called VMware Cloud on Equinix Metal, which combines VMwares cloud infrastructure with Equinix's bare-metal-as-a-service products, VentureBeat reports. The new offering is in response to enterprises growing need to satisfy differing requirements for security, data sovereignty and locality, latency and performance based on their workloads, which has led to a significant shift to a significant shift to hybrid and multicloud environments. As companies accelerate their digital transformation by adopting hybrid multicloud architectures, they require consistent application experiences that span private and public clouds, and reach from the core to the edge, said Zachary Smith, Equinix's global head of edge infrastructure services. Smith said the new tool is a secure method of extending cloud deployments into distributed metro locations, letting enterprises satisfy vital performance demands at the edge while enabling them to safeguard the integrity of enterprise workloads. The new service will leverage Equinix's 240 data centers that boast low-latency connections to public cloud services, allowing less than 20 milliseconds of latency while meeting stringent data residency requirements, according to Smith.
