‘Cash out’ crew member sentenced to 21 months in prison

A member of the “cash out” crew was sentenced to 21 months in prison earlier this week on charges of wire fraud conspiracy and conspiracy to commit access device fraud and identity theft.

Robert Dubuc, 41, used information from hacked accounts at banks, brokerage firms, payroll processing companies and government agencies to attempt to steal at least $15 million from American customers, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release. Dubuc operated the Massachusetts-based branch of the cash out scheme, which was primarily run by men in Kiev, Ukraine.

The international group gained unauthorized access to customers' bank accounts, which they then used to divert money to other accounts and buy pre-paid debit cards.

In addition to his prison sentence, Dubuc will serve three years of supervised release and must pay $338,685 in restitution.

Another Massachusetts man related to the crew, Lamar Taylor, was sentenced to 30 months in prison and $300K restitution earlier this month.
