Illicit SSNDOB Marketplace selling 24M Americans’ data dismantled

The U.S. Department of Justice announced that the FBI, in collaboration with authorities in Latvia and Cyrus, was able to take down the SSNDOB Marketplace, which has been selling nearly 24 million U.S. citizens' personal information, after seizing four of the illicit marketplace administrators' domains, according to CyberScoop. Personal data being sold in the SSNDOB Marketplace included names, birthdates, and Social Security numbers, said the Justice Department. Meanwhile, a study from Chainalysis revealed that over $22 million in bitcoin had been processed by the marketplace since 2015. SSNDOB was also discovered by Chainalysis researchers to be associated with the Joker's Stash darknet market, which had been disrupted in January 2021. The dismantling of SSNDOB comes a week after the Justice Department and the FBI disclosed the takedown of the weleak.to subscription service. "Identity theft can have a devastating impact on a victims long-term emotional and financial health. Taking down the SSNDOB website disrupted ID theft criminals and helped millions of Americans whose personal information was compromised," said IRS-CI D.C. Field Office Special Agent-in-Charge Darrell Waldon.
