The Hill reports that Missouri man Garrett Endicott, the sixth and last member of the international hacking collective "The Community," has been sentenced to 10 months imprisonment and ordered to fulfill a fine of over $120,000 after engaging in alleged "SIM hijacking" activity.
Members of The Community had been indicted two years ago for leveraging SIM hijacking to enable the theft of $50,000 to $9 million in cryptocurrency from U.S.-based victims, according to the U.S. Justice Department.
The actions of these defendants resulted in the loss of millions of dollars to the victims, some of whom lost their entire retirement savings. This case should serve as a reminder to all of us to protect our personal and financial information from those who seek to steal it," said Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan Saima Mohsinsaid.
