Steve Hunt, a security analyst, has joined the advisory board at Promisec, an endpoint security management provider. Hunt is president of 4A International, a security research and development firm. He formerly led a team at Forrester Research.

Microsoft has acquired Whale Communications, a leading provider of Windows-based SSL VPNs and web application firewalls. Whale's products are meant to complement existing secure access solutions built into Microsoft Windows Server and Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server. Neither side disclosed terms of the deal, which is expected to close this month.

Louisiana State University has deployed network access control and intrusion prevention solutions from ForeScout Technologies. The vendor's CounterACT solution will offer security for the university's 30,000 students, 1,200 full-time faculty and 3,000 staff. The solutions will help the college answer difficult challenges, including protecting confidential information and providing open network access to a temporary student population.

ArcSight, a leading enterprise management provider, has acquired network security company ENIRA Technologies.

The acquisition, which combines ArcSight's detection and ENIRA's remediation capabilities, will allow security and network teams to efficiently respond to daily security threats.

Terms of the purchase, expected to be completed soon, were not disclosed. All ENIRA employees are expected to join ArcSight.

Red Hat, a provider of Linux and open-source solutions, has opened offices in Brazil and Argentina. The expansion gives the company a Latin American presence for support, training and sales.

Julian Somodi has taken over as general manager for Red Hat South America. Somodi, a longtime Red Hat partner, previously worked with Oracle and Apple.

Platform Computing has earned Common Criteria certification for its enterprise grid solutions. Products certified include Platform LSF and Platform LSF HPC, workload management solutions, and Platform LSF MultiCluster, software that allows companies to share IT resources. The certifications ensure the products adhere to strict security standards.

Anchiva Systems, an appliance-based enterprise network content solution provider, has launched sales in the United States.

The 20-month old Santa Clara, Calif.-based company, which offers virus, spam and spyware control, has received more than $10 million in venture capital funding.
