Industry innovators 2007: WetStone Technologies

Occasionally one gets to see a set of products whose only connection is that they take really hard problems in a particular application space and address them in remarkably innovative ways. These are the solutions to hard problems that everyone says you can't do, but you have to do it anyway. One of the core concepts that underlies pretty much everything at WetStone Technologies is that post mortem forensics and, in particular, media forensics (disks, memory sticks, etc.) simply are not enough today. With that in mind, a significant part of WetStone's innovation over the years has been in the area of live forensics.

Innovation is in WetStone's heritage as researchers for the Department of Defense (DoD). As a small business innovation research (SBIR) participant for several years, WetStone's personality is very forward-looking. As described by a WetStone visionary, the DoD clients for whom the company has performed cutting-edge research and development are not interested in things they can get off the shelf.

The products in the WetStone line have only one thing in common: they address hard problems in forensics. We have sometimes been asked why we would pick a forensics company that does not perform media forensics in the same way as do other market leaders in that space. The answer is simple: media forensics has nowhere left to go. By analyzing various types of computer media forensically, there are limitations on where the products can go. They are focused on doing the same tasks, but addressing changes in the media — such as size, anti-forensics measure and different file systems.

The tools that WetStone develops look forward to entirely new environments, pervasive computing and other emerging environments, the key concept being entire environments.
