U.S. issues sanctions on Russian firms, citizens for NotPetya and other cyberattacks

Just a few days after President Trump requested that Russia be included into the G7, the U.S. Treasury Department issued sanctions against five Russian companies and three citizens for providing material and technical support to the Russian Federation government for the NotPetya and other cyberattacks.

The companies are Digital Security, ERPScan, Embedi, Kvant Scientific Research Institute and Divetechnoservices. The individuals singled out are Aleksandr Lvovich Tribun, Oleg Sergeyevich Chirikov and Vladimir Yakovlevich Kaganskiy all of whom are connected to Divetechnoservices. All are being sanctioned under Executive Order 13694, “Blocking the Property of Certain Persons Engaging in Significant Malicious Cyber-Enabled Activities.”

“As a result of today's action, all property and interests in property of the designated persons subject to U.S. jurisdiction are blocked, and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with them,” the Treasury Department stated.

The Treasury Department specifically noted the sanctioned entities and people were involved in Russian-backed malicious and destabilizing cyberattacks including NotPetya, “cyber intrusions against the U.S. energy grid to potentially enable future offensive operations; and global compromises of network infrastructure devices, including routers and switches, also to potentially enable disruptive cyber-attacks.”
