Gates still helping with ongoing probes, Mueller asks for sentencing delay

Former Trump deputy campaign manager Rick Gates continues to aid Special Counsel Robert Mueller in "several ongoing investigations," according to a Friday court filing asserting that Gates isn’t ready for sentencing just yet.

While some pundits have speculated that Mueller is wrapping up his probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and whether members of the Trump team colluded with operatives from the nation-state, the court document indicates that investigators are still actively pursuing leads. "Gates continues to cooperate with respect to several ongoing investigations, and accordingly the parties do not believe it is appropriate to commence the sentencing process at this time," the filing noted.

It has been a busy week for members of the president’s inner circle who are under scrutiny by prosecutors. Former Trump Campaign Manager Paul Manafort, Gates’ business partner, was given a combined sentence of seven-and-a-half years in two courts for charges unrelated to the 2016 election. Gates was set to be sentenced for conspiracy associated with his and Manafort’s Ukraine lobbying activities. Gates pleaded guilty to that charge in February 2018 and testified against Manafort in his recently concluded trial.

On Thursday, Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who is presiding over the Gates case and one of the Manafort cases, set a trial date of Nov. 5 for longtime Trump friend and adviser Roger Stone, who has been charged with lying to Congress, obstruction and witness tampering.
