Why Nominated: Ning Wang is a rising star who has worked to break the boundaries in the security industry so that people can see that anyone is capable of starting a career in cybersecurity and advancing it – important at a time when WannaCry and breaches like Equifax are daily reminders that cyberattacks have a global impact, but an estimated 3.5 million cybersecurity jobs will remain unfilled by 2021, according to Cybersecurity Ventures.
Profile: Born in China and educated at the University of California, Berkeley, Wang worked in six startups reporting to CEOs after leaving McKinsey & Company, including finance and operations chief of Lynda.com, which was acquired by LinkedIn in 2015 and known as Microsoft’s LinkedIn Learning. She also was chief finance officer of Eucalyptus, which is now owned by HPE. More recently, she served as second-in-command of HackerOne.
Now, as CEO of Offensive Security, Wang has her sights set on expanding the training offerings available to aspiring cybersecurity professionals to better meet the needs for the wider business community.
She sees herself as a role model for ambitious professionals looking to expand and advance their career in the information security industry. But she also serves as a role model for everyone in the field, her colleagues say.
What colleagues say: “At each step of Ning’s career, she’s been one of the few women in male-dominated professions. Ning has focused on getting the work done and not playing any particular stereotypical role – and has always stood up for the rights of women. But mostly, the results have spoken for themselves, and as she continues to advance in her career, she’s nearly always holding a role that is most typically and traditionally held by a man. Whether there are glass ceilings or not, Ning has always progressed right through them. The more seniority she has achieved, the more she has also started to spend time on topics of diversity and inclusion, while providing guidance to females who are early in their careers. What’s most wonderful about Ning is that she serves as a great role model for young ambitious professionals – she’s not only a role model for women, but for everyone.” - Mårten Mickos, CEO, HackerOne
