Report: DDoS Attacks Can Result in $2.5 Million in Losses for Companies

By Marcos Colon

Organizations should consider distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks a serious threat, especially since it could cost them millions of dollars.

A new report by analytics firm Neustar found that businesses can lose up to $2.5 million on average per DDoS attack. Released on Tuesday, the company’s annual “Worldwide DDoS Attacks and Cyber Insights Research Report,” reports on the trends tied to the popular cyber threat.

Of the 1,010 businesses surveyed for the study, 84 percent indicated that they had fallen victim to the attack, and 86 percent shared they were hit more than once. Of the 849 companies that said they were impacted by a DDoS attack, a total of $2.2 billion in revenue was lost responding to the incident.

According to Neustar, 63 percent of companies surveyed said a single attack amounted to $100,000 in lost revenue per hour.
