SC Magazine earns top honor at ASBPE Awards

SC Magazine took top honors as 2010 Magazine of the Year at the annual Azbee Awards of Excellence gala held in New York on Wednesday, July 28. The event is sponsored by the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE), the association for editors, writers and designers working in the business, trade, and specialty press.

A panel of judges selected 10 finalists in categories for publications with revenues of $2 million or more, and of less than $2 million, and then chose a winner in each division. Judges from the professional B2B magazine-editing world evaluated three consecutive issues from each entrant, examining their writing, reporting, and editing; their usefulness to and interactivity with readers; editorial organization; and layout and design.

SC Magazine won the 2010 Magazine of the Year award in the under $2 million category for its “clean design” and “well organized layout.” One of the judges said, “you know where you are in the publication,” while another complimented the magazine for its quick, easy pullout data and number of entry points for the reader. The publication also won for its ability to cover relevant topics and as one judge put it, “to get the job done.”

In addition to the top prize of Magazine of the Year, SC Magazine won nine other awards in National and Northeast Regional designations.

In the 2010 Awards National Competition, the Dec. 2009 "Reboot" issue of SC Magazine won a Silver Award for Annual Buyer's Guide. Editor-in-Chief Illena Armstrong picked up two awards for her editorial excellence in penning "Guarding against a data breach" (Jan. 2009), which won the Bronze Award for Original Research, and for her cover story, "CSO of the year" (May 2009), which won a Bronze Award for Individual Profile.

The SC Lab team (Peter Stephenson, Mike Stephenson, Judy Traub and John Aitken), which provides all the product reviews each month, took home a Silver Award for Product Section (March, April, May 2009).

Dan Kaplan, deputy editor, was recognized for Feature Article with a Silver Award for his cover story, "Inside Out" (March 2009).

In the 2010 Awards Northeast Region Competition, Kaplan also was honored with a Bronze Award for Feature Article for "Change of heart" (September 2009). Editor-in-Chief Illena Armstrong won a Silver Award for Editor's Letter (Feb. and May 2009), while Managing Editor Greg Masters won a Bronze Award for Case History with "Riding shotgun" (Dec. 2009).

Art Director Brian Jackson took home a Silver Award for Graphics Excellence in the Opening page/spread-photo category for "Certifiably trusted" (Oct. 2009).

In prefacing her keynote address to the crowd assembled at a restaurant in midtown Manhattan, Armstrong (left) remarked, "My colleagues, team and I want to thank ASBPE for this awesome award. It's definitely a privilege to receive this recognition from our industry peers and certainly one we'll be celebrating for quite some time to come, as well as an honor we'll be trying for again next year, and the next and the next…"

The congratulations are beginning to roll in. Tony Keefe, development director at Haymarket Media, corporate parent of SC Magazine, said: "I'd like to congratulate the whole SC team and in particular the edit team who together have created a truly amazing editorial product on a small staff. It made me proud to share in their success. Well done everyone."
