Texas schools cut spam by half with appliance-based system

After receiving "numerous complaints" about spam, the Spring Independent School District has cut spam volumes by half after rolling out an appliance-based solution.

The Texas District, located 20 miles north of downtown Houston in an urban area of Harris County, deployed McAfee SpamKiller e1000 appliance working alongside McAfee's WebShield appliance anti-virus technology to stop spam at its network perimeter and so stem the tide of unsolicited junk email reaching its 3800 employees.

"After numerous complaints regarding the amount of spam our employees were receiving, we realized we had to address this issue immediately," said Alan Berry, Novell Network Specialist, Spring Independent School District.

"However, we wanted a solution that would easily integrate with our current infrastructure. McAfee SpamKiller appliance has not only helped us achieve our goal of decreasing spam traffic by over 50 per cent since the product was first deployed, but McAfee also made the overall process simple, fast and easy to manage."

According to Berry, the District selected the appliance-based system because of its relative ease-of-use and its ability to provide multiple methods for ferreting out offensive and dangerous spam which had been plaguing its teachers, students and administrative faculty.

Using the appliance, Berry said the Spring Independent School District is better able to scan each incoming email as it reaches its internet Gateway, ensuring that network resources are not wasted by spam.

McAfee claims that its SpamKiller product family has been developed to detect spam with a success rate of up to 95 per cent immediately after installation, with a false positive rate of less than 0. 5 per cent. The product features six different methods of spam detection - Integrity Analysis, Heuristic Detection, Content Filtering, Black and White Lists, RBL Support and bayesian filtering.
