Hello world: SC World Congress and SC Congress Canada

As cybercrimes launched against large and small organizations alike continue – all the while becoming more sophisticated and, now, sometimes focused on specific companies or government agencies, the need for information security pros to learn the latest best practices to protect critical data is paramount.

Once again, SC Magazine is looking to help its readers fulfill some of this need by holding not only its annual SC World Congress in New York for the third year, but also another major industry event – SC Congress Canada. Planned for November, both events have industry experts leading educational sessions, free keynotes about the latest trends, top vendors and service providers sharing information about their offerings in free-to-all expo halls, and still other happenings sure to keep attendees informed.

SC World Congress Conference and Expo, the East Coast's largest information security event, will be held once again in New York on Nov. 10 and 11. A week later, Nov. 16 and 17, SC Congress Canada will take place in Toronto. This inaugural event serving our neighbors to the north is the newest venue for information security industry executives to discuss security threats and regulatory mandates at the highest levels.

The New York conference offers insight from many of the nation's leading security experts. Richard Clarke, a former White House counterterrorism adviser, will provide attendees with analysis of the broader issue of cyberespionage. In an interactive session titled “12 Hours to Network Meltdown,” Col. Mike Convertino, the leader of the U.S. Air Force's premiere information warfare group, and Peter Stephenson, SC Magazine technology editor, will lead hacking teams into a fictitious company that recently deployed a private cloud.

“There's been much talk about international cybersecurity as it relates to attacks on the public and private sector, and at the SC World Congress we are going to address what the future threat landscape will look like.” Convertino said.

In addition to several other keynotes and speaker sessions, SC Magazine is hosting the Security Innovators Throwdown for the second year running. During this competition, leading young companies compete to share ideas to address today's information security needs. The winner and finalists will be showcased in a future edition of SC Magazine.

As well, a number of select vendors will be on the show floor displaying their latest products and service solutions. It is a testament to past success that for this year's Congress event in New York, a number of vendors have put their support behind the show, including Qualys, Sophos and Cisco.

Meanwhile, SC Congress Canada, too, has its share of support from the marketplace. Confirmed exhibiting sponsors for the this event include Fortinet, IBM Canada, Panda Security, Symantec, Sophos and Hewlett-Packard.

Further, the Canada conference will feature in-depth analysis of the latest security threats, industry trends and drivers that contribute to the overall profitability of organizations – all localized to the Canadian audience. The new event showcases numerous Canadian information security executives, including Jennifer Stoddart, Canada's privacy commissioner, who will provide insight as to how and why the plethora of developments around privacy benefits organizations and individuals in Canada. A keynote from Ann Cavoukian, Ontario information and privacy commissioner, and Scott Swartz, energy infrastructure and cybersecurity adviser for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), will look at the latest threats and attack vectors, as well as major privacy concerns affecting the North American power grid.

“I am looking forward to speaking at the inaugural SC Congress Canada event, with a view to adding a fresh, Canadian perspective to some complex global IT security issues,” said Cavoukian.

SC Congress Canada is expected to be Canada's largest IT security show.

“Through the SC World Congress, SC Magazine is committed to furthering the education and experience of today's information security pros,” said Illena Armstrong, editor-in-chief, SC Magazine. “This year's event will deliver against that commitment and seek to empower attendees with the necessary tools to strengthen their information security infrastructure for years to come.”
