CCTV is more than just a technological older brother that gets on your nerves. Despite claims of a surveillance society (Editorial, SC June), we must not forget its valuable work in protecting key business assets.
With the business crime index reporting a 20 per cent increase in crime-related insurance claims in 2006, customer safety is a chief concern for retailers. The onus is on businesses to make intelligent use of CCTV to provide a secure and safe environment.
Most businesses have basic systems in place, but they only tackle threats retrospectively and do not provide enough intelligent surveillance. Advanced, unobtrusive methods, combined with business rules, can predict and even prevent criminal activity while significantly reducing loss. CCTV should be hailed as sorely needed backup against criminal bullies in the business playground.
