Apple rehires crypto legend Jon Callas

Cryptology executive Jon Callas returned to Apple this month, according to a Reuters report. The announcement follows the FBI/Apple showdown over the iPhone 5c used by Syed Rizwan Farook, one of the San Bernardino shooters.

Callas was a co-founder of several private communications companies, including Blackphone, Silent Circle, and PGP Corporation. He was also CTO of the authentication platform Entrust. Callas worked at Apple from 1995 to 1997.

Most recently, he was CTO and co-founder at PGP Corporation. He announced on Twitter last month, “Last week was my last day-2-day w/ @SilentCircle. Yes, amicable. As an investor, I love the enterprise direction. Just going a different way”.

It is expected that he will help Apple continue to strengthen security features in response to the company's legal battle FBI this year. The legal dispute over the device came to a close when the FBI hacked the device reportedly by using a zero-day exploit. The conflict has wider implications to Apple customers; last month, the agency sent a letter to local law enforcement officials, stating that the FBI would assist state and local law enforcement with their digital investigations.

Callas's role at Apple has not yet been announced. While he returned to Apple earlier this month, his LinkedIn profile says he is employed at “I Could Tell You But Then I'd Have To Kill You and Associates.”
