Google releases email security, compliance services

Google today announced email security, encryption and archiving services for enterprise users.

The new software-as-a-service (SaaS) security and compliance offerings, which the company has dubbed Google Message Filtering, Google Message Security and Google Message Discovery, are targeted to users of Google Apps, as well as Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange and Novell GroupWise.

Google Message Filtering provides spam and malware filtering for $3 per user per year. Google Message Security matches Google Message Filtering with virus detection, outbound processing to prevent data leaks and content policy management for $12 per user per year.

Google Message Discovery includes filtering and security services, as well as a year of searchable message archiving, for $25 per user per year without storage limitation. Additional years of archiving will cost $10 per year per user.

Sundar Raghavan, Google Apps product marketing manager, told SCMagazineUS.com that Google is trying to reach as wide an email-user base as possible.

"We're making the product open and available to work with Notes, Exchange and GroupWise," he said. "Our goal is to respect the choices our customers have made and provide technology, including security and compliance, that provide increased value in Google Apps, making it much more economical for customers than what's available today."

The Google Apps platform includes Gmail; Google's Docs for word processing, spreadsheets and creating presentations; Calendar; and Talk for instant messaging. More than 500,000 businesses, plus thousands of universities, use Apps, according to the Mountain View, Calif.-based company.

Google's move to deliver email security products will bring major changes to the anti-spam market, Joseph Vaccone, president and founder of Google distributor Excel Micro, told SCMagazineUS.com.

"I think this is [Google's] first strong step in the direction of taking over the SMB [small-to-medium business] market for spam filtering, as well as email hosting," he said. "This is [Google's] first offering to reduce the cost of message security. The next phase will be tighter integration with Google Apps and email security. When these are fully integrated, we'll see increased interest in switching to Google Apps from Microsoft's Exchange."
