Barracuda Networks acquires Purewire for cloud services

October 13, 2009
Email and web security vendor Barracuda Networks on Tuesday announced the acquisition of software-as-a service (SaaS) web gateway vendor Purewire.

Barracuda Networks made the acquisition to bolster its existing cloud-based offerings and to enable its security solutions to now be delivered across appliance, SaaS and hybrid models, the company said in a news release Tuesday.

“This combination expands our set of SaaS-based solutions, provides new infrastructure and technology, and creates enormous potential to extend our cloud services across all of our rapidly growing product lines,” Dean Drako, president and CEO of Barracuda Networks, said.

As part of the acquisition, Purewire co-founder and CEO Mike Van Bruinisse will become vice president of enterprise sales at Barracuda and Purewire's co-founder and CTO Paul Judge will become VP of cloud services and chief research officer at Barracuda. In addition, the companies' research and threat analysis teams will combine to form a new Barracuda Labs research arm.
