Company news: Schneier joins Co3 Systems and McAfee’s name change

»Bruce Schneier (left) has joined Co3 Systems, a Cambridge, Mass.-based incident response management solutions provider, as CTO. He currently serves as a fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School and at the New America Foundation's Open Technology Institute, and previously served as chief security technology officer at BT (British Telecom), a UK-based communications services company. He also served as CTO of Counterpane Internet Security, prior to the firm being acquired by BT. Schneier has served on Co3 Systems' advisory board since April 2013. »Intel, which acquired security firm McAfee in 2010, will now phase out the McAfee brand name and have new products  introduced under the wholly owned subsidiary branded Intel Security. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich announced the re-branding, which will take up to a year to complete, in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. An Intel spokeswoman told SC Magazine that the company will retain McAfee's red shield logo. Software pioneer John McAfee founded his namesake anti-virus company in 1989, but sold his stake in 1994. »Blue Coat Systems, a Sunnyvale, Calif.-based business assurance technology provider, has acquired Norman Shark, a San Diego-based malware analysis solutions provider.  With the deal, Blue Coat expects to enhance its advanced persistent threat identification and resolution services for customers by incorporating Norman Shark's zero-day sandboxing technology into its offerings. Blue Coat previously acquired Solera Networks, a South Jordan, Utah-based provider of big data security solutions for advanced threat protection.  »Seculert, an advanced threat protection solution provider with operations in Menlo Park, Calif. and Israel, has made two IT security appointments at the firm. Richard Greene has joined the company as president of field operations and Moshe Meiseles has come aboard as vice president of research and development. Greene brings more than 25 years of IT security experience into the role, including previous roles as president and CEO of AppCentral and in sales and management positions at McAfee and Symantec. Meiseles previously served as executive vice president of engineering at OpTier, a New York-based application performance and big data management firm. »Ashton Erler (left) has joined White Ops, a New York-based online fraud detection firm, as vice president of product management. In the role, Erler will be responsible for identifying the company's goals for its digital advertising security efforts and enterprise security solutions. In addition, he will help grow the product development team at White Ops and report to the firm's CEO Michael Tiffany. Erler will be based in the company's Brooklyn, N.Y. headquarters.  »Akamai, a Cambridge, Mass.-based provider of cloud-based security solutions, has acquired Prolexic, a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) mitigation firm headquartered in Hollywood, Fla. With the acquisition, Akamai expects to provide customers with a more comprehensive offering of security solutions focused on protecting enterprise web and IP infrastructure against application-layer, network-layer and data center attacks. Akamai acquired Prolexic for approximately $370 million in net cash payment, plus the assumption of outstanding unvested options to purchase Prolexic stock. The deal is expected close in the first half of 2014.  »Barry Sheldon has joined Foreground Security, a Lake Mary, Fla.-based security consulting, training and services firm, as vice president of federal business development. Sheldon brings more than 25 years of experience in public sector and IT consulting experience to the role, where he will be tasked with expanding Foreground's government contracts and service offerings for federal agencies.
