Dan Cornell – Denim Group

Dan Cornell
CTO, Principal
Denim Group

Why Nominated: Denim Group CTO Dan Cornell, who created the company’s ThreadFix vulnerability management platform, and his team were awarded three separate technology patents in late 2018 for tools used to reduce the time organizations spend analyzing data and identifying vulnerabilities in their development pipelines.

Profile:  In his pursuit to create a seamless approach for companies to secure applications and write more secure code, Dan Cornell has guided Denim Group’s development teams in the creation a method of correlating and merging static application security testing (SAST) and dynamic application security testing (DAST) for web and mobile applications. He and his team received two patents for Hybrid Analysis Mapping (HAM), which help organizations efficiently manage large volumes of data generated by application security testing programs.

A month later, Cornell’s team snagged a patent for its HotSpot technology, used to identify vulnerabilities code internally developed and shared between development teams. As a result, the team made it possible for more serious vulnerabilities to be fixed with less effort, a plus for teams overwhelmed with remediation responsibilities. The patents stand as a testament to Cornell’s innovation and leadership.

He has logged more than 15 years of experience in architecting, developing and securing web-based software systems. Prior to Denim Group, Cornell served as the CTO of BrandDefense, architecting and developing the company’s cutting-edge intellectual property protection technologies. And he was the vice president, global competency leader for Rare Medium’s Java and UNIX competency center, and a founder and vice president of engineering for Atension, Inc.  Cornell also developed simulation applications for the Air Force with the Southwest Research Institute.

What colleagues say:  Dan has been slow to get a haircut lately because his many accomplishments have consumed a substantial amount of his time. Dan is an accomplished software developer and information security luminary. He is a sought-after speaker and thought leader on threat modelling, security vulnerability management, integrating security into continuous integration/continuous deployment software development architectures, and general enterprise digital transformation. As the inventor of ThreadFix, Denim Group’s flagship vulnerability management product, Dan has tirelessly pushed the state of the art of application security. When has he gotten a haircut? Prior to one of his many industry and community awards including the Trinity University 2018 Darryl Waldron Business Leadership Award for his contributions to his community. Dan Cornell single-handedly created the application vulnerability correlation product category and is very deserving of this honor. And doing so will encourage him to cut his hair.” - Sheridan Chambers, Principal, Denim Group
