FBI Arrests Software Engineer Attempting to Steal Trade Secrets

By Marcos Colon

The Department of Justice has announced the arrest of Dmitry Sazonov, a software engineer who allegedly tried to steal trade secrets from the financial services company he worked for.

A native of New York’s Rockland County, Sazonov is being charged with one count of attempted theft of trade secrets, according to a DOJ release.

During his alleged attempt to steal valuable computer code from the company, Sazonov tried to cover his efforts by leveraging the technique of steganography, hiding “the code within other PDF files like personal tax and immigration documents on his work computer,” FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William Sweeney Jr. said.

If convicted, Sazonov could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, “or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense.”
