MessageLabs buys secure IM company

Email security company MessageLabs is to buy New York-based enterprise instant messaging company Omnipod for an undisclosed sum. The completion of the acquisition remains subject to shareholder approval.

The move expands MessageLabs' portfolio into secure instant message services for customers. Omnipod currently has around 200 enterprise customers and some international users. MessageLabs said it will work closely with Omnipod's clients to provide continuity of services.

MessageLabs said it would now be able to offer its customers a broad range of secure messaging services.

"Increasingly our clients are looking to us to manage all of their messaging security needs. Today, we are now able to manage and secure all business critical internet traffic - email, web and IM," said Ben White, CEO of MessageLabs.

Omnipod's Professional Online Desktop (POD) is designed for enterprise use and integrates collaboration features such as chat, global SMS, WebEx online conferencing, Salesforce.com, file sharing and transfer capabilities.
