More Than 120k Victims at Risk Following Tax Season Phishing Scams

Although people still have until April 18 to submit their taxes, CSO Online’s Salted Hash blog has reports on the number of successful incidents disclosed by organizations this year has reached 110, according to data from Databreaches.net.

While they’re simple, these attacks are incredibly effective for cyber criminals looking to siphon sensitive information they can ultimately profit from.

In a release that discusses these business email compromises, also referred to as business email spoofing, IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said the schemes can “result in the large-scale theft of sensitive data that criminals can use to commit various crimes,” such as filing fraudulent tax returns.
