New Scam Spoofs Microsoft Support Website

By Marcos Colon

Through nefarious ads, victims are redirected to a spoofed Microsoft support website that displays a pop-up message indicating that their computers are locked because of a virus infection, according to a blog post on Microsoft’s Malware Protection Center.

The message asks users to call a technical support number. If the victim selects the “OK” option or attempts to close the pop-up message, the website “continues to serve the pop-up messages…effectively locking your browser” and seemingly redirecting users to the Chrome browser’s version of the Microsoft support page, when it’s still the scam site.

“As this newly discovered support website shows, scammers are always on the lookout for opportunities to improve their tools,” according to the blog post.
