Nordstrom data breach exposes employee information

High-end retailer Nordstrom is in the process of notifying its employees their data may have been compromised in a breach.

The Seattle Times reported worker names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, checking account and routing numbers, salaries and additional information is included in the breach notification, which is being sent by email or being personally delivered by the retailer's managers.

Nordstrom said in the statement its security team spotted the issue on October 9 which was caused by a contract worker improperly handled the employee information. The worker in question no longer has access to any worker data with the company adding that at this time it has no indication the compromised information has been shared or used inappropriately.

No details on what the contract worker did were released, but Nordstrom did say local law enforcement has been brought in to help investigate.

Nordstrom has not yet replied to an SC Media request for additional information.
