Personal information of 20,000 Western Union Customers hacked

What happened? Hackers broke into a Western Union database and stole the personal information of 20,000 customers.

What types of personal information? Names, addresses, phone numbers and credit card information.

When did the breach take place? Late May.

What was the response? Western Union sent out letters to victims on July 6 and offered to pay for a year of credit monitoring.

Details: The data was held in an offline file that was not accessible through westernunion.com, according to the company.

Quote: “We are not aware of any ID theft or any kind of fraudulent use that was made from this information,” said spokeswoman Sherry Johnson.
