Ransomware Continues to Dominate Threat Landscape, Q1 Study Says

By Marcos Colon

With the array of threat tactics that cyber criminals can leverage at any moment, ransomware continues to be the flavor of the month quarter for online miscreants.

A new study by security firm Malwarebytes analyses the threat landscape in the first quarter of 2017 and suggests that ransomware attacks still pose the greatest challenge.

According to the analysis, Cerber is the most distributed ransomware sample in the quarter accounting for 90 percent of the share, replacing Locky which Malwarebytes says “dropped off the map” after the controllers of the Necurs spam botnet opted out of it.

Additionally, Mac malware activity is on the rise after a series of backdoors have been discovered in the first quarter that are nearly the same amount found in all of 2016. Of the new Mac malware samples discovered, one includes a new ransomware strain dubbed FindZip.
