San Diego Country, California employees mistakenly had their personal information, to include Social Security numbers, forwarded to Wells Fargo late last year.

What happened? San Diego County mistakenly sent the personal information of all its employees to Wells Fargo Bank in December.
Details? On Dec. 17, 2015 San Diego County inadvertently sent to Wells Fargo the PII of all its employees instead of only sending the data for those who had signed up for a Health Savings Account (HSA) that is managed by Wells Fargo. The bank then set up an HSA for every employee, whether or not they requested one. Currently, the county does not believe any PII has been leaked.
What was the response? The county is working with Wells Fargo to delete all the unwanted HSA accounts along with the personal data attached to each. After investigating the incident the county has determined the action was done accidentally when the county's telecommunications service provider, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Services, incorrectly programmed the system handling the data transfer. The country is providing free credit checking services to its employees.
