SC wins three top national honors from ASBPE

SC Magazine received three national awards from ASBPE, the highest honor in the annual awards contest open to business-to-business, trade, association and professional publications.

The web news team of SC Magazine received a National Gold Award for the publication's online Web News Section.

The SC Magazine website now offers more in-depth, unbiased business and technical content so visitors are able to quickly find up-to-the-minute news, comprehensive features, analysis pieces and objective product reviews. Much of this editorial content is written and compiled separately from what appears in the publication's monthly print issue.

The SC staff frequently attends security industry conferences such as BlackHat, DefCon and RSA, so SC reporters can keep readers informed of breaking news pieces and offer video interviews with industry executives.

At the time of the contest submission, the SC web team consisted of Teri Robinson, executive editor; Doug Olenick, online editor; Robert Abel, content coordinator; Jeremy Seth Davis, senior reporter; Greg Masters, managing editor; and Illena Armstrong, VP, editorial. The team has since been enhanced with the addition of Bradley Barth, senior reporter.

Art Director Michael Strong was recognized with two national awards: A National Gold Award for his front cover illustration of "Spotlight on Security Planning," a May 2015 special supplementary issue of SC Magazine, and a National Bronze Award for Opening Page/Spread-Photo for his layout of "Who Goes There," the cover feature story in the June 2015 monthly issue. The spread caught the eye of the ASBPE judges for its powerful image on a darkened background that bleeds across the two-page spread while the headline, deck and copy block cascade to the left, emphasizing the topic.

Strong supervised the opening photo spread so that the photographer, J.M. Eddins Jr., captured the theme of the story, privacy. Runa Sandvik, a noted security and privacy researcher, is the focus of the article. She is portrayed holding a laptop with her image pixilated on the laptop screen to lucidly illustrate the idea of encryption and attempts to obscure personal identity away from the prying eyes of government authorities and cyber thieves.
All the elements – typography, image, colors – pleasingly cohere and cleanly punctuate the story's theme.

The ASBPE honors – in Overall Excellence, Online, Design, and Print divisions – were presented as part of its 38th annual Azbee Awards of Excellence banquet on July 21 at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla. ASBPE, which represents more than 1,000 journalists for B2B, or “trade publications,” was originally known as the American Society of Business Publication Editors.
