Stanford University investigates stolen laptop

Current or former employees are at risk after a Stanford University laptop was stolen.

How many victims? 72,000 current and former workers who received a paycheck prior to Sept. 28, 2007.

What type of personal information? Names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, business titles, office locations, work and home telephone numbers, home addresses, salary data, email addresses, college ID numbers.

What happened? A laptop was recently stolen. Officials released no specifics about the circumstances surrounding the theft.

What was the response? The school is notifying victims through email and standard mail.

Details: Authorities do not believe the thieves targeted the laptop for its data. No information has been accessed fraudulently.
