More than four million Britons have become the victims of ID fraud, according to new research.
In a poll of 1,000 UK residents, Sainsbury's Bank found that 9 per centclaimed to have had their identity stolen at some point. The averagecost per person was £3,039, and some claimed to have lost morethan £10,000.
The research highlighted a lax approach to personal information. One inthree people surveyed admitted to throwing out old bank statementswithout shredding them, while one in ten don't bother to tear up creditand debit card receipts.
