Washington State boosts email defenses

Following a series of crippling attacks, Washington State University has implemented new systems to keep out email viruses and spam.

WSU has installed the Barracuda Spam Firewall 600 from Barracuda Networks in order to protect more than 25,000 students, staff, and faculty users across all four of its campuses.

The move follows a detailed report last February by an internal advisory committee which found that spam accounted for at least half of all incoming email. The University was also hit by a succession of email-borne viruses that brought its mail systems to a halt.

The Barracuda system handles more than 150,000 email addresses served by the network's mail aliasing system. WSU reports a sharp decline in spam since the system was introduced.

Part of the attraction of the solution for the budget-conscious educational establishment was the fact that Barracuda charges a flat fee rather than on a per-user basis.
