Weak WLANs register little concern for IT managers

Although corporate IT managers believe wireless networks require more protection than local area networks, most have done little to address the problem.

According to research conducted by Survey.com and sponsored by Fortress Technologies, some 85 percent of IT leaders at companies with anywhere from 500 to 1000-plus employees state that corporate data flowing among their wireless networks is less secure than the same information on wired networks. However, only 55 percent of those managers who participated  have actually added a security product to protect their corporate WLANS.

Meanwhile, a whopping 94 percent of respondents concede that if corporate data was exposed it could have a material impact on the business or brand. Another 69 percent state that their wireless networks are exposing critical business applications.

At the same time, though, most IT managers note that such risks have not deterred them from implementing WLANs. Further, around 60 percent say they would expect only a minimal impact to their wireless networks from the likes of  DDoS attacks. Such interruption, they say, would only result in some time or money loss, but not enough to register major concern.

Several hundred enterprise IT managers and senior technology executives from financial services, healthcare, manufacturing and government organizations participated in the survey.
