RSA 2013: Rookie mobile app security company judged “most innovative”

A mobile app security start-up was named the "Most Innovative Company" at RSA Conference 2013, besting a number of competitors also offering cutting-edge solutions for bring-your-own-device (BYOD) management and other corporate concerns.

San Mateo, Calif.-based Remotium on Monday won the conference's fourth-annual “Innovation Sandbox” competition held at San Francisco's Moscone Center.

Remotium won for its technology that runs mobile applications on public or private clouds so end-users aren't required to store corporate data on their devices.

Around 200 people milled around at the half-day event, which also gave attendees the opportunity to participate in “venture speed dating” – where they could speak with investment experts and discuss their business ideas.

Remotium was one of 10 finalists to compete on Monday, where entrepreneurs had minutes to present their business plans before judges, similar to the setup of reality television show "Shark Tank."

After the event, Remotium CEO Sinan Eren told SCMagazine.com that it was “nerve-racking” presenting business plans before a room of peers, but, in the end, the vendor's central message was delivered.

“Our company's goal is to solve the BYOD problem," he said. "We [strive] to prevent enterprise data loss at any cost, but also while preserving the user experience.”

Last year, San Francisco-based Appthority, another security firm that offers mobile-related technology, took the first-place prize. The industry recognition at RSA Conference could attract interest from investors, as well as potential clients.

More than 60 companies were considered before the top 10 were selected. Candidates were required to be privately held organizations with less than $5 million in revenue last year. Participants were required to demonstrate their technology live at the Innovation Sandbox event, and the product must have been launched within the year.

Other finalists were Bromium, Light Point Security, Nok Nok Labs, PrivateCore, Silent Circle, Skyhigh Networks, Spotflux, Victrio and Wickr.
