The Federal Trade Commission is calling on cyber warriors to help protect Internet of Things devices, and they’re ready to award them for it.
Following the wave of distributed denial-of-service attacks that knocked major DNS providers and others organizations offline – primarily due to the nasty Mirai botnet – the regulator has announced the IoT Home Inspector Challenge to promote the development of an IoT security tool.
Security experts can earn an award of up to $25,000 for creating a “technical solution that consumers can use to guard against security vulnerabilities in software found” on IoT devices located in homes, according to the FTC announcement. Each honorable mention winner will win a $3,000 price.
The deadline for registering for the competition is May 22, and all winners will be announced “on or about” July 27.
