Industry and law enforcement team up to fight phishing

Tech firms have joined with ISPs, banks and law enforcement in a new effort designed to fight phishing.

Digital PhishNet establishes a single line of communciation between industry and law enforcement. The goal is provide timely data to law enforcement agencies so they can better apprehend phishing suspects.

"The key to stopping phisher and bringing them to justice is to identify and target them quickly," Dan Larkin, unit chief at the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, said in a prepared statement.

Supporters of the effort include AmericaOnline, Digital River, EarthLink, Lycos, Microsoft, Network Solutions, VeriSign, the FBI, the Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. Secret Service, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Altogether, the group brings together 10 U.S. banks and financial-services firms, four ISPs, and five tech firms to work with federal and international law enforcement agencies.
