Letter: Compliance on a budget

Ian Cook makes some interesting points in his article regarding the need for companies to employ an holistic combination of procedures and processes when looking into appropriate storage solutions (SC Guide to Compliance, July).

However, while it is undoubtedly important for all businesses toprioritise their data according to compliance and business requirements,it's unfortunately often the case that the implementation of aninformation lifecycle management (ILM) strategy remains woefully out ofreach, particularly for SMEs.

SMEs have few of the resources of larger businesses, and the priorityfor them is to efficiently store and retrieve business-critical data asand when it is needed. If it isn't possible to implement an ILMstrategy, solutions such as online storage and backup can enable a smallbusiness to remotely and securely store its data and begin the processof ILM at a realistic cost. Access to data stored online from any deviceor location also means that compliance is made much simpler, making thiskind of solution ideal for companies with limited resources.
