The Canadian restaurant chains owned by Recipe Unlimited were hit late last week with a cyberattack that has forced some of its locations to temporarily close.
The Ontario-based company, which until recently was known as Cara Operations, reported it is experiencing issues impacting its point of sale operations and that some locations have been closed as a precautionary measure. Recipe Unlimited operates more than 1,000 restaurants throughout Canada under several names including Swiss Chalet, Harvey’s and Kelsey Roadhouse.
The company reported the attack began on September 28 and the company immediately took steps to mitigate the situation.
“As a result, we have taken a number of our systems offline and suspended internet access to affected locations as a precaution. This caused some of our restaurants to experience some service delay related issues, including being unable to process credit and debit card transactions,” Recipe Unlimited said in a statement.
The company did not release how many locations were shut down or what type of malware was used.
Although no connection has been made in this case, the Magecart APT group has been named as the malicious actor behind a string of retail attacks including British Airways, Newegg and a Ticketmaster third-party vendor. In each case, the victim’s payment system was targeted.
