Researchers warn of Spigot browser hijacker PUP

Users should be on the lookout for a large family of Spigot browser hijackers, Malwarebytes researchers warned.

The potentially unwanted program (PUP) is advertised as a free desktop application that offers direct links to websites from your preferred new homepage, yet in reality, offers no more functionality than a few bookmark tabs, according to a Feb. 8 blog post.

Extensions for the download are available for Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet explorer and Microsoft Edge browsers and researchers said that installing the software will get the user nothing but an “Unsupported Browser” notice.

The Spigot browser possibly attempts to mitigate concern of this with a warning in the terms and conditions that a user must agree to which note that the software may change a user's internet Browser settings and/or provide you with the ability to opt to make changes to your Internet Browser settings.
