The widely reported hacking attempt on a voter database reported by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) was a false alarm – white hat hackers working with the Michigan Democratic Party were simply simulating a phishing test.
"There are constant attempts to hack the DNC and our Democratic infrastructure, and while we are extremely relieved that this wasn't an attempted intrusion by a foreign adversary, this incident is further proof that we need to continue to be vigilant in light of potential attacks," Bob Lord, the DNC's head of security, said in a statement.
The DNC initially claimed to have foiled an attempted spearphishing attack aimed at hacking the voter database, which is hosted on Votebuilder, after receiving an alert Tuesday from security firm Lookout.
It said at the time that the would-be attackers had created a fake login page in an attempt to snag credentials that could be used to access the database.
