The Month: Ups and downs

Consumer mistrust in banks 71%

Nearly three quarters of UK consumers do not trust their bank. Bankingis now less trusted than the technology, health and even the educationsector, a reverse of the situation in 2006.

- Willingness to pay for extra security 10%

Despite this lack of trust, only one in ten UK consumers is prepared topay for greater security, down from 40 per cent two years ago.

- Phishing Summer onslaught on RBS

Last month stands out for a massive phishing campaign targeting RoyalBank of Scotland customers. LloydsTSB was another popular target inJuly. Old favourites eBay and PayPal remained high on the list oftargets, although activity against them was dwarfed by the attack onRBS. Singling out one bank for a short, intense phishing campaign seemsto be a popular tactic lately.
