As the former cybersecurity advisor to President Obama, it’s fair to say that Michael Daniel knows a thing or two about the information security industry, let alone the challenges that both the government and private sector face when it comes to cybersecurity. Currently serving as the president of the Cyber Threat Alliance (CTA), Daniel is far too familiar with the constantly evolving threat landscape and ultimately agrees that things aren’t looking too great for both enterprises and the government, especially given the current state of our political climate.
“Unfortunately the trend lines are currently against us,” Daniel told Infosec Insider during a recent video interview at the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. “As we hook more and more stuff up to the internet, as we become more and more dependent on the digital ecosystem, events that would have been nuisances 25 years ago are now potentially life-threatening, certainly business-disrupting events.”
It’s a cat and mouse game, but Daniel believes it’s time for the security industry to finally “step up its game” as it works toward protecting the digital ecosystem.
One way to do so is through collaborative information sharing, he says. Not only between businesses, but between the government and the private sector. In order for this to truly work, Daniel believes hard lines will need to be drawn when it comes to doling out responsibilities, and effectively communicating those responsibilities with all parties involved.
