Sens. Graham, Gillibrand look to establish a committee to examine 2016 election hacking

Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY, and Lindsay Graham, R-SC, introduced legislation that would create a 9/11-style commission that would investigate the cyberattack that took place during the 2016 election.

The bill would create the National Commission on the Cybersecurity of the United States Election Systems. This committee would not only look back at the last election cycle, but make recommendations going forward on how to best secure the election process, Graham said in a statement.

The committee will also document any harm or attempted harm that took place in 2016, look at foreign cyber interference in other nation's elections and identify emerging threats.

We need to ensure we fully understand the threat they pose and the best practices to protect ourselves from future attacks. This issue should be beyond partisan politics as it strikes at the heart of our democracy.  We must take steps to ensure that we protect the integrity of our elections from hostile, outside, and foreign influences,” Graham said.

Gillibrand noted the committee's information is needed to protected that nation as another election in on the horizon.

“The clock is ticking before our next election, and these questions are urgent. We need to be able to defend ourselves against threats to our elections, our democracy, and our sacred right to vote,” she said.
