  4. 4. Building a Better Workplace Starts with Saying “Thanks” - It can feel like there’s little to be grateful for these days. Many of us are stressed about our health, our finances, and our jobs and these worries can create a vicious downward spiral, impacting our physical and mental health, hurting our performance at work, and straining our relationships. When we lose sight of the positive and focus on the negative, we’re more likely treat our colleagues poorly; we might insult them, talk about them behind their backs, and ignore or exclude them. Research on positive psychology reveals it lifts people up, specifically using gratitude. Managers should address the complex problem of workplace mistreatment more broadly, more holistically, by cultivating a culture of gratitude. How? Here are a few science-backed suggestions: 1. Leaders should serve as role models. 2. Make time and space for gratitude. 3. Allow employees to interact with beneficiaries. The bottom line: Managers should emphasize the importance of expressing thanks and appreciation at work. Cultivating a culture of gratitude won’t just boost employees’ well-being and performance. According to our research, it’ll also help stop workplace mistreatment.

Data safes will give users control over their data - People need to regain control of their own data, instead of it being in the hands of the tech giants, according to Belgian professor of computer science Ruben Verborgh, who is working with World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee on Solid, a set of standards for personal “digital data safes” to be set up.

Video call fatigue is setting in, Robert Half finds - While an overload of meetings is a known workplace problem, the pandemic has exacerbated the issue with organizations conducting most meetings virtually, according to Robert Half's findings. While many are still working remotely, organizations may not need every meeting in a virtual format. Instead, different, shorter meetings could offer a replacement, according to Robert Half.
