The Barracuda Networks Web Application Firewall can protect vital web applications from possible exploit by hackers. This appliance protects many applications, including Outlook Web Access, SharePoint, Oracle, FTP, XML and SOA, as well as custom applications within the environment. This product also features a virus scanner for file uploads and direct integration with security information and event management (SIEM) devices.
We found this appliance to be easy to deploy and configure. It sits inline, between the router and various web servers, to ensure full protection. Once the tool is deployed and the management IP address is set, all management is done via the web-based management interface, which we found to be well-organized with its easy-to-navigate tab-top structure.
This appliance includes many integration features, which add to its overall protection functionality. It can integrate not only with logging and SIEM devices, but also Active Directory and two-factor authentication devices. Furthermore, it has a multitude of load-balancing and traffic-management functionality built-in. Outbound traffic from the appliance is also scanned on the fly to ensure protection against data leakage and theft.
Documentation includes quick-start, administrator and a few other supplemental guides. The quick-start guide provides an excellent amount of detail on how to get the appliance up and running in the environment, while the administrator guide offers in-depth configuration and management tasks. We found both to be well-organized and to include many screen shots, diagrams and configuration examples.
Barracuda offers 24/7 support to customers through a subscription service. This includes not only product updates, but also access to phone and email technical assistance.
At a price just under $10,000, we find this offering to be an excellent value for the money. The Barracuda Web Application Firewall includes a lot of functionality and flexibility that is easy to use and configure at a reasonable price.
