The Cyberoam CR100ia from Elitecore Technologies provides solid gateway protection features above and beyond the usual UTM feature set. This product has all the functionality of a UTM - such as gateway anti-virus, spyware and spam protection, web content filtering and firewall and IPS - but its strength is in its flexibility and configurability when it comes to application management and security. This product uses identity-based controls to provide a high amount of control over applications such as IM, chat and file transfers.
We found this tool to be very easy to deploy. The initial install is done through connecting to the web-based interface of the appliance and running through a short setup wizard. This wizard sets the network properties, as well as allows users to pick an initial policy for LAN to WAN traffic. After the wizard is completed and the appliance reboots with the new settings, all further management is done through the GUI, which we found to be intuitive to navigate with a clean and organized layout.
As far as configuring policy, this product allows for a lot of customization with many options. However, the policy set at deployment provides a solid starting point and, in most cases, only minor tweaking is necessary for full protection.
Documentation included a quick-start guide that detailed the steps to connect to the network and complete the setup wizard. Also included were several configuration guides and a user guide. We found all these to be well-organized and to include many screen shots and configuration examples.
Cyberoam provides support based on its TVS, or Total Value Subscription, program. Based on the level of TVS support, customers get access to eight-hours-a-day/five-days-a-week or 24/7 technical support, updates and firmware upgrades.
At an out-the-door price of $3,750, with the first year of support included, we find this product to be a solid value for the money. This appliance offers granular, identity-based policies and many protection features that are easy to configure.
