SC Magazine has been running both standalone and an annual review of anti-virus solutions for around ten years and has watched the development of this particular technology while adding to its extensive virus library to enable the tests to be fair but tough. During our round of arduous tests eTrust Antivirus provided the type of results that we have come to expect over the years. It delivered a perfect score during Test One where we ensured that the product had to go through each and every virus on the in-the-wild list.
In the second test the solution had to disinfect all of the viruses from Test One that were capable of being disinfected. But in doing so it could not damage the infected object, be it file or hard disk. Having restored it to its former state the data had to be readable or the application had to run as it had formerly. And similarly, eTrust Antivirus sailed through Test Two, providing another perfect 100 percent
In Test Three against the onslaught of 1,012 polymorphic viruses it again ran into no problems whatsoever and carried its so-far perfect score into Test Four against our second division viruses. These are the ones that may not be in the current in-the-wild list, either because they have dropped off or because they may only be listed in a subsidiary category (as for example a virus only affecting a small part of the world or having only been picked up by one reporter). These do usually end up on the main list at some point and should be protected against. eTrust Antivirus didn't let us down, sweeping all 226 to finish with 100 percent detection.
Our fifth test and penultimate test looked at how eTrust Antivirus coped with our macro library. This library has been reduced to around 50 percent of the total to allow for the recent drop-off in macro viruses and therefore we discarded the older versions in favor of the new.
Our sixth and final test was an array of new viruses that had made it onto the ITW list. As the product was only provided with updates to combat viruses on the current list, it provided an opportunity to see what it was capable of detecting with the new viruses and variants. This may be the area which shows the biggest difference in the detection rates and lets you see where forward thinking on the developers' side may protect you further. eTrust Antivirus detected all of the new viruses and therefore proved itself to be a worthy contender in the fight against these security threats.
