FileAssurity OpenPGP Command Line Scriptor

Encrypting files while becoming a necessary part of security has remained somewhat of complex beast to understand and perform. This product aims to strip away the hard work of encrypting batches of files coing into and going out of the enterprise.

The scriptor allows administrators to set up the necessary scripts to allow users to send encrypted information to other users. and it also allows files to be securely deleted when appropriate.

Installing is simple enough, we installed this on our test Windows 2000 server in our network (the vendor tells us that Unix and Linux versions will be available soon). The graphical interface is easy on the eye. We were asked to provide a password before we could use the console. It allows simple passwords to be created, so the onus is on the administrator to come up with a suitably secure password.

The software uses 256-bit AES encryption to secure files. For compatibility with older OpenPGP products that do not support the AES algorithm (e.g. PGP v5.x and v6.x) the software uses 192-bit 3DES.
How the software works is by getting users to leave files on a network share and then setting up the Scriptor to check files on that share and automatically encrypt them. The console allows the administrator to set up the command line perimeters that run on the files deposited.

One of the first tasks is to create a key for encrypting files. One of the handy features of the software is the key manager. This allows the administrator to import keys from other users and in turn keys become available for selection in the "encrypt for" drop down list box.

The user interface takes away the need to manual write command line scripts to encrypt data and we found it was relatively easy to set these scripts up in a few minutes.

Using was very easy, in fact it could be worked out without resorting to the user manual. Files can be picked from either the computer the software is installed from or via ftp from a remote computer. All that is needed is to fill in the blanks.

Overall this is a useful little application for automating the process of encrypting and sending files and will make a useful addition to a systems administrators toolset.
