As a gateway appliance, the product protects against both inbound and outbound viruses and spyware. It can also prevent an organization from sending out viruses in outbound email. We were impressed with the compliance management capabilities of the product. Several templates and databases are included, as are tools for building custom policies and databases. The reporting capabilities in the dashboard were very impressive.
The appliance comes with SonicWALL's Time Zero Virus Technology, which uses heuristic statistical methodology and virus outbreak responsive techniques to determine the probability that a message contains a virus.
A nice feature we discovered was the product's ability to prevent DHA (Directory Harvest Attack) and DoS (Denial of Service) attacks. There is email alerting for emergency alerts and user level access to review, manage and delete items in the junk mail folder. SonicWALL also provides zombie detection, which protects networks against unauthorized software running on computers within an organization, attempting to send out junk email, spam, phishing, virus or other unauthorized content.
With today's compliance and e-discovery requirements, we found the product's ability to archive all incoming and outgoing email a major benefit. This can be accomplished by either forwarding to an external SMTP server or to a local file system.
The documentation was excellent, but we found that we really did not need it as the web-based management was extremely easy to use. Numerous support options exist to cover the hardware, phone, email and web-based support and product/subscription updates.
The product lacked the malware integration we saw in other products, but as a focused email malware product, it does a great job for a very attractive price.
