Like most other SonicWALL products, the PRO 4100 is a stateful inspection firewall with additional security components, which inspect into the data portion of the packet for deep packet inspection.
The traditional firewall controls are supplemented with an application level firewall, which delivers the aforementioned deep packet inspection. The SonicWALL device also incorporates a logging feature, which can be utilized from the same configuration web browser-based session. Several reports can be generated from the same interface, including bandwidth usage by protocol, bandwidth usage by IP address, and sites generating the most traffic.
The installation of the PRO 4100 is straightforward and about as simple as installs can possibly be. The unit ships with a getting started guide, which walks the administrator through the installation and configuration of the SonicWALL unit. The initial configuration takes place inside of a web browser-based session (both HTTP and HTTPS are supported). This initial configuration takes place inside a wizard, which sets the internal and external IP addresses and also sets the DHCP range for the internal interface. The default firewall configuration blocks all incoming traffic, but allows all outgoing traffic. The configuration can be changed with new firewall rules.
Additional documentation is available on a CD. This also includes software utilities to make the initial configuration of the system’s IP address easier.
Support is available at an additional charge. For 8/5 support the annual fee is $1,185, and for 24/7 support the cost per year is $1,600. The SonicWALL support site is available for free and offers extensive information about troubleshooting and configuration of SonicWALL devices.
The pricing for the SonicWALL PRO 4100 is $6,995, which places the appliance at the upper end of the price spectrum.
